The Idea of Progress

 

The Idea of Progress is the theory that the different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become happier in terms of quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress). 

Progress implies change and evolution  and throughout history most of the advances have been positive. However the rhythm of progress seems to have accelerated over the last few decades and  the technological breakthroughs and scientific developments are causing  some people to question this progress. What effect do these « advances » have on our society? Do they always have a positive effect on the way we live?

Do certain new technologies bring people closer together or do they alienate us?  What effect does this progress have on our culture?

Here are just a few topics to help you illustrate this notion

1. Scientific Progress

– Medical advances:  cures for illnesses such as AIDS and certain cancers

– Cloning

– Performance enhancing drugs

– Genetically modified organisms

– Designer babies

– Space travel

2. Technological Progress:

– Cheap and rapid transportation across the world enabling transport of products all over the world

– Advances in global communications networks facilitating the exchange of information

– Robots, automated production

– The internet – advantages and disadvantages (have we become to dependent on technology, is it isolating us from one another?)

3. Social Progress:

–  Women’s rights :  obtaining the vote for women, the fight for equality, equal pay

– Increased recognition of minority groups: ethnic, racial or religious minorities

 

What are the ethical, social and environmental consequences of these developments? What effect do they have on our modern-day world?

    Je passe mon bac cette année et je bloque sur le thème « Idea of prrogress » . On a mis comme problématique  » what are the impact o new technologies? » . Je pense donc mettre des avantages et des inconvéniants. Seulement je sais pas si en parlant que des réseaux sociaux sa va suffir, si j’aurais assez de matière pour tenir le temps nécessaire. Auriez-vous des astuces ou des idées à me donner ?

    Je suis en Première et je dois faire un oral de 3min en Anglais avec un texte sur la notion idea of progress. J’ai choisi de parler du progrès au niveau social avec le cas des femmes qui obtiennent le droit de vote par exemple.
    Je suis un peu perdu et trouver un texte en anglais sur ce sujet est compliqué .

    voici mon oral:
    Introduction:

    TV is a constant presence in most Americans’ lives. With its fast-moving, it commands many people’s attention for several hours each day. Studies have shown that television competes with other sources of human interaction such as family, friends and school. It also influences viewers’ attitudes and beliefs about themselves.
    It seems fair to ask ourselves:
    What are the impacts of television on humans?
    First, we’ll see the physical impacts caused by television and then, we’ll see the moral impacts caused by this invention.

    I]Physical impacts ( p.23 : D ,C,A -24: A )

    Today, the average American watches close to 8 hours of TV each day like we can see in document D. But it’s very dangerous because TV can shorten our life !
    Indeed, like we can hear in an oral comprehension in document C, an expert says that every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes.
    Moreover, by watching TV too often, our health is in danger : eyes suffer from it and the tele viewer, slumped and filling with chips and chocolate ,risks to gain weight.
    Like we can see in document A we learn that a children who watch too much TV, have many problems at all points of view such as: academic difficulties, obesity, sleep issues, attention-span disorder and diabetes but nowadays, we can add another negative point on this list : being bullied. This is because children who spend more time watching TV have less time to interact with their family. This, impacts a child’s ability to make friends because they lack the interpersonal skills needed for effective socializing.
    The document A (p.24) certifies this document. Indeed we are so much fascinated by this magic box ,that we forget everyone around us , so TV entails a degradation of the family life.

    Thus, on the physical plane, TV train many negatives and dangerous impacts, but we will see now that the impacts of TV don’t stop at this level.

    II] Moral impacts (p.23: B)

    Indeed, as is clearly illustrated in document B: we are puppets.
    Indeed on the picture we can see at the bottom: people with body, at the middle: TV screen and at the top: a hand which controlling people!
    So, without realizing it, we are manipulated by television and the media, we don’t think any more, we swallow all that we present us. This is the result of the changes which effected on our behavior. Indeed, TV has a moral impact on human. We want to look like the heroes of our series at all points of view, which is bringing about a change in our moral behavior, our actions, our thinking , influences our mood and our sensitivity.
    Moreover, the TV broadcasts too many violent scenes and increases the aggressiveness of the young people

    So, unfortuately, however,far too much programming is not wholesome and uplifting but is violent , degrading and destructives to moral values.

    Conclusion:

    To conclude, it seems good that the television, such as it is nowadays, presents much more dangers than advantages. We should reduce the quantity of violence and increase the number of cultural programs. In the meantime, it would be necessary to advise to people, and especially to young people, to watch TV by avoiding the excess, with critical mind.

Hello… en ce moment il y 13000 visiteurs par jour sur le blog…si tout le monde me demande de corriger leur travail je pense que je ne vais plus dormir! j’ai lu rapidement et il n’y a pas trop de fautes mais je trouve que la problématique et le contenu n’est pas vraiment adapté à la notion. Ça ne parle pas assez de mythes et/ou héros c’est plutôt « idea of progress » ou « people and places of power »…. c’est vrai que le même sujet peut être utilisé pour les 3 mais il faut le modifier un peu plus pour ne pas être hors sujet

  6. Bonjour ! Je suis bloquée pour ma notion « Idea of progress ». J’aimerais avoir une idée de problématique, j’ai déjà une idée de plan :
    I/ What is Surrogacy + un exemple concret d’une indienne qui est surrogate mother
    II/ Which country is against-in favor surrogacy + ethical issues surrogacy implies
    Le problème c’est que je ne sais pas à quelle problématique le plan répond-il ?

  7. J’aurais besoin de votre aide svp, je dois choisir soit une vidéo ou une chanson pour présenter une des notion au choix et je suis totalement perdu! Quelqun pourrait me donner une idée de video chanson ou meme film avec lequel je pourrais parler d’une des notions ? (Mythes et Héros, Espaces et Échanges, Idée de Progrès, Lieux et Formes de pouvoir ) Merci d’avance

Tu peux faire sur « Mosquito coast » ou encore  » Into the wild », dans le premier, le personnage part sur une île pour créer sa propre société et il va créer ses propre machines etc… Dans le second, le personnage part voyager seul en laissant tout derrière lui, et il va croiser des gens qui vont lui faire changer la vision qu’il a du monde.

    jour férié ou non, cela n’empêche pas les profs de nous envoyer des mails pour nous donner des devoirs! C’est vraiment très urgent; en anglais, je dois faire un texte pour une expression orale sur la notion « idée de progrès ». Je suis vraiment perdue et ne sais pas du tout quelle problématique et quel plan adopter.

    Tout d’abord, voici ce que j’ai fais sur cette notion:
    – innovation is great: Rolls Royce
    – puis plusieurs travaux sur la génétique:
    – une image « Clones R Us »
    – une vidéo « Uses of genetic engineering »
    – un texte: définition de « eugenics »: Encyclopaedia Britannica
    – un autre texte: extrait de « Brave New World »: Science babies
    – une compréhension orale sur la stérilisation forcée aux USA dans les années 3

    J’espère que vous pourrez me donner une problématique et un plan, à partir de tous ces documents…

    1. Hello
      tout d’abord il ne faut pas paniquer…. ce n’est pas le BAC. Tu n’es pas obligée de prendre tous les documents sur la liste. Tu peux en prendre trois et les présenter. Eventuellement tu pourrais choisir « To what extent can genetic engineering be considered as progress? Is it positive or negative? » Ensuite tu peux présenter les avantages et inconvenients et presenter les articles/images/videos pour illustrer. Sur le blog tu trouveras une description de la notion et un plan type pour ta présentation. et c’est mieux de rester simple – pas de phrases longues et compliquées. Good luck.     1. Des articles sur les paralympiques pour montrer que les athlètes handicapés puissent faire des grands exploits grâce aux progrès (je n’ai pas d’exemple pour l’instant). Sinon sur le blog il y a un article sur Pistorius qui pourraient correspondre: https://anglaispourlebac.com/2014/04/07/oscar-pistorius-the-rise-and-fall-of-a-sports-hero/
      c’est plutôt pour myths et héros mais ça peut illustrer comment le progrès l’a aidé à courir plus vite. Sinon des articles sur le dopage en expliquant c’est c’est le coté négatif du progrès (Armstrong par exemple)

    Je suis en terminale L et je suis en pleine préparation de mes notions, il est vrai que je m’y prend un peu tard donc c’est un peu la panique, j’aurais besoin de votre aide pour la notions espaces et échanges alors pour espaces et échanges j’ai décidé de ma focalisé sur  » why are hispanics so willing to emigrate to or to sneak into the U.S.A? pour cela j’ai pris les documents suivants  » A Northern El Dorado » et  » Spanglish, by Ian Stavans de 2003″ , pourriez vous m’aidez a toruver un plan et une problématique s’il vous plait !

  12. Bonsoir, je voudrais faire mon oral blanc d’anglais sur le monde de la mode et l’ampleur que ça prend de nos jours. Malheureusement je n’arrive pas à relier ce sujet avec une notion, mais je pense que la notion la plus adapter et idea of progress. Je ne sais pas quelle problématique pourrait être la mieux adapter à cette notion. Pouvez-vous m’aider?

    1. Ca dépend des articles vus en cours – oui je verrais bien  » idea of progress  » (les années 60, l’émancipation de la femme….ou alors « mass production » des vêtements et la société de consommation) . Pour la problématique ça dépend des documents présentés…

En fait, j’ai totalement changé de sujet, je vais faire mon exposé sur l’éducation et l’école en Corée du Sud (très strict avec 15h de cours par jours au minimum et les meilleurs élèves du monde sont Coréen) . J’ai choisi comme problématique : In What way does the power of school affect teenagers lives?
        Pouvez-vous me dire si tout cela est assez correct?

    je prépare mes oraux et j’ai des difficultés avec deux des notions: idée de progrès et espace et échange.
    Pour idée de progrès nous avons vu quelques progrès scientifique ( double transplantation de mains), des chanteurs qui protestent contre la guerre dans les années 60, les civils rights movement. En négatif nous avons vu un discours d’Emma Watson qui dénonce l’inégalité Hommes/femmes, et une vidéo d’une jeune coréenne dans un centre car elle était accro au web.
    Pour espaces et échanges, nous n’avons travaillé qu’autour d’un seul thème: le multiculturalisme. Nous avons vu l’intégration des migrants des caraïbes en Grande-Bretagne, un texte montrant ce qu’apporte le multiculturalisme a la G.B (des avantages) et un texte dans lequel une mère immigrée raconte les avantages pour elle et sa fille de vivre à Londres et non pas dans leur pays d’origine. Nous avons également vu une vidéo montrant que Londres est un mélange de culture ( quartiers chinois et bangladais).
    J’aurais besoin d’aide pour trouver à partir de ces documents une problématique et un plan por chaque notion.

    1. First of all I would like to give a definition of «Exchange». It’s a continuous movement or circulation. It includes all type of exchanges : people, trade or media. A society can be approached from the point of view of its cohesion and openness, which raises questions about its place in the world. The geography of commercial channels and networks of influence, but also the discovery and conquest of new land constitute new cultural areas which often transcend the borders of a States. The border which limit two spaces will sometimes seen as a protection against the other or otherwise the opening to a larger space. The space can evolve and take different forms. However, we decided to focus our work on the United States. The concept «Spaces and Exchanges» illustrates the theme of the discovery of new space so it implies the discovery of new territories, the major waves of immigration, the fact of transgressing the frontier and finally the travel which involves the search of new experiences or a sense of community . Today we see that despite a very uneven level of development, the world has never been such integrated. We are witnessing exchanges of all kinds are in culture, arts, science, philosophy, religion, and more generally in everyday use. It is a way to unify people.

      To my mind, the documents thats seems to best illustrate the notion is are a drawing by Jeff Parker, a song from Bruce Springsteen called American land, an extract from a speech of Barack Obama and finally, an extract of The Flat World by Thomas Friedman.

      The first document is a cartoon by the cartoonist, Jeff Parker. It deals with the Pilgrims. It’s the name commonly applied to early settlers of the Plymouth Colony in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. In this drawing, we can see Indians or Native Americans who are building up a high fence so as to prevent pilgrims or settlers to land and to settle down in the USA. The first European settlers arrived in 1620 on board the May Flower. The caption is full of sarcasm and irony : historically the Indians did not prevent the Pilgrims from setting down in the USA. They even helped them. In the end, Indians lost their lands, their culture and traditions. The point of view given in this caption is a modern point of view. The autor denounces the modern American point of view about immigration.Times have changed but the same problems remain because history repeats itself, even today.

      We can make a link between the document and the notion because it focuses on a major issue which is the transmission of knowledge, culture made between American and Indian. Moreover it raises the problem of immigration in American nowadays.
      I like this document because the author exposes his point of view with humor and I think it’s a efficient way to make people understand, especially in this case because it is a touchy subject.
      The second document is a song from Bruce Springsteen called American Land. Through this song, he evokes the thoughts and aspirations of a young immigrant who sees America as a land of home. The narrator is a young adult who have a girlfriend. His aim for the future is to settle down in the United States.

      Moreover, he wants to live the American dream. And for him, every American can live in luxury, abundance and wealth. We can notice it : «Over their all the woman wear silk and satin to their knee». According to the author, the United States is a paradise for workers, a kind of Eldorado. He thinks it’s a land of opportunity. We can see it in line 28 : «There’s treasure for the taking, for any hard working man». The narrator says that America welcomes everyone, regardless of religion, nationality, or social class. He come from a small village and arrived in New York city. So he feels amazement, surprise and fascination towards this city and this country that seems to be perfect. The reason why people emigrating is that they thinks that America is an open society where everybody is on an equal footing. For them, overnight, they can climb the social ladder and become rich even if at the begining they were poor because United Stated is a country without social barrier. They think they can start from scratch and afford expensive materials, something that they couldn’t do before. Futhermore, he said that the workers are the founders of this city and they died by building it. Because they lived in dire straits with a very low income. They were destitute, without better prospects. Their goal was to achieve success. The narrator says that the situation of immigrants is still the same, they take risk to emigrate to the US because of the power of attraction of the American dream. Indeed, there was an important wave of immigration and almost all were part of working class, the blue collars. In this song, Bruce Springsteen praise United States but he is aware of the difficulties of the working class. We can established a link with the notion, Spaces and Exchange because this document evokes the immigration in the United States. Indeed, the flows person is a kind of exchange because this people bring their culture and knowledge in a new country. I chose this song because I like Bruce Springsteen and I think it’s more fun and less academic. Moreover, this document bring to us an immigrant’s point of view, so subjective.

      The third document is an extract of a speech from Barack Obama, the president of United States. This extract is called Helping the dreamers. It addresses the immigration policy of the nation. He mentioned the « dreamers », child of immigrants coming young in United States, who have made their studies, who play in the neighborhood and who have pledged allegiance to the flag. They are American in their heart and mind, but not officially. Often they realize that when they must doing paperwork such as a license, grant, or at work. At the end of the extract, President Obama encouraged his audience to put themselves in the place of these young people facing deportation to a country they do not know and they do not know the language and culture. That’s why he wants to create « the dream act » law dreamers. We can make a link between the topic of this document and our notion. Indeed, the president evokes the immigration nowadays and the fact of share culture. I chose this extract because it’s a recent speech which allow us to understand the politic nowadays. Moreover I like the poetic metaphors that realize the president about the «dreamers».

      Finally, the last document is a letter from Bill Brady to Thomas Friedman. It deals with a new tendency in the medical domain which is the outsourcing of CAT scans. Nowadays in the USA especially during the night, CAT scans are sent to doctors in India (for instance) so foreign doctors can read and interpret the scans immediately. The biggest advantage is that patients can be taken in charge very quickly even if there is no radiologist in the American hospital. The Indians doctors are supposed to be trained and to be as good as the American radiologists. But we can guess that if a CAT scan is read by an Indian doctor, it may cost less and the American radiologists may earn more money. This new tendency is allowed by the advances in new technology but we can wonder if it is a good thing would you prefer to have your scans read by an American doctor or an Indian one. America is supposed to be at the top concerning new technology and medicine yet. This document deals about the globalization and in especially in terms of medicine. Here, the knowledge transgresses the frontier. I chose this document because it evokes the globalization in a way that I didn’t know. Futhermore, this is a subject that lends to controversy so I think it is interesting to study.

      To conclude, we can consider that the globalization have a massive role in terms of exchange. Indeed, thanks to new tool such as internet, the knowledge and culture for example can be share all around the world in a very short time. The actors of this globalization are the states, the government who allow or not the share and the different kind of exchange or the social network. Nowadays, the working condition evolve, we evoke this fact previously in the last document. However, this phenomenon have some positive and negative impact. The North is favored due to its advanced development unlike the South. This is why people from the South try to reach the North for live a better life and improve their way of life. Unfortunately, this country can not support these waves of immigration.

En cours nous avons parler de Big Brother et Big Data, nous avons étudier un texte sur « One man’s vision of the future », une CO « building the perfect baby », ainsi qu’une caricature de Norman Rockwell « Thanksgiving » (où tous le monde est sur son smartphone lors du repas).     Sinon est ce qu’un plan en These/ antithèse/ synthese marche ? ca ferait :

    III. Vers une mondialisation equitable

    EX : I- (Tu explique ce que tu as vus en cours a propos du Designer Babies)
    II- Tu dis pourquoi tu es pour le Designer Babies (explication)
    III- u dis pourquoi tu es contre le Designer Babies (explication)
    Ccl : donc tu conclus en donnant ton point de vue sur la question

  22. bonjour, j’ai absolument besoin de votre aide, cela fait des jours et des jours que je bloque pour ma notion Idea of Progress. Comme document, j’ai choisi « recording, memories of the sixties » trois personnes qui donnent leur point de vue sur les années 60 en angleterre, le document « Times’ cover » dans meeting point p33, un contraste entre le « vieux » Londres et Londres des années 60, et un texte intitulé « The times are changing » qui parles des principaux changements durant les années 60. Ma problématique est donc : What are the main changes appeared in the 60s? mais impossible de trouver un plan … Can you help me please ?

      1. Ah oui merci beaucoup, c’est vrai que c’est beaucoup mieux.
        Par contre pour le plan je comptais faire en :
        *I- les différences entre les années 50 et les années 60 (en me basant surtout sur le document times’ cover)
        *II- le progrès technologiques avec la tv en colour, les voitures etc (recording memories of the sixties)
        *III- le progrè en rapport aux femmes avec le droit de vote, leur façon de s’habiller etc (Times are changing)
        mais voilà je me rends bien compte que le plan est nul mais je ne sais pas quoi faire d’autre, et surtout quelque chose qui colle mieux aux documents que j’ai choisi…

      2. mais non c’est pas nul! l’essentiel est de présenter plusieurs documents qui illustrent bien la notion! et là ça me semble pas mal.

J’ai montrer ma feuille sur l’idée de progrès qui avait comme problématique « is scientific progress always positive ? » où je parlais de designer baby fait dans des tubes et du bébé sauveur créée pour sauver un autre enfant, à ma prof, et elle m’a demandé de recommencer ma notion complétement car elle veut que je parle du progrès social et scientifique, pas que du progrès scientifique, pour elle c’est trop vaste. avez vous des conseils à me donner ? Je suis complétement perdue!
